Earring length

Hold a ruler flat against your earlobe. Under an inch, an earring stays on the lobe. From about an inch and a half it hangs below, and around two inches it reaches your jawline and moves when you turn your head.

Hoop sizes are given as the length of the hoop from top to bottom, which is also roughly how far it drops below the piercing.

Earring weight

Weight is the number to read before width. As a rough guide, a pair of studs weighs a few grams, and a statement drop can weigh two or three times as much. If you wear earrings for a full day, compare the grams on two pages before you choose.

Some of our data gives weight per earring and some per pair. The page says which when the data does, and prints the figure as given when it does not.

Necklace length

A 16-inch chain sits at the base of the neck, 18 inches falls just below the collarbone, and 20 inches drops to the top of a crew neck. A choker sits highest, close to the base of the neck.

An extender adds a short length of chain at the clasp, so you can wear the same necklace a little lower over a higher neckline.
